I have to be dreaming

It's a great day at the beach. The sun is shining, the seagulls dance around the clouds, and the wind is just at the right speed. Nick and his lovely woman are enjoying the water, they swim, and they play around, splashing each other. Both are smiling, laughing out loud.
Finally they get out of the water, they're holding each other hands, no one feels cold, it's early in the morning and the sun is at it's best.
As they walk to their spot, the sand starts getting hotter and hotter. Ouch, he screams.
Now they're running, they're basically the only ones there, so they don't worry about kicking sand to other people.
They get to their spot. I'll never let your head hit the pillow without my hand behind it, Nick tells his woman, as he helps her lay down in the sand. She smiles and kisses him.
Now he lies next to her. The sun bothers both of their eyes, so they decide to go on their side so they could look at each other instead. Nick is tired, not too tired though, it's mostly a relaxed feeling so his eyes starts to feel a little heavy until he finally sleeps.
In his dream, he kisses his woman but it's not a normal kiss it tastes different like a goodbye kiss. Suddenly he feels this emptiness inside him, something that he's never felt before. He tries to wake up; I have to be dreaming... he tells himself.
He shakes his head over and over until he finally open his eyes...
She's not there laying next to him. He looks at the water, at the same place where everything was going great before but he doesn't see her. He gets up, looks around, there's nobody at the beach, only a couple of kids making sand castles by the shore.
He starts to worry and goes back to their spot, waits a couple of minutes, but still there's no sign of his woman. Now he walks back towards the boardwalk where some stores are just opening, so he asks some people. They look at him like he's crazy, and he gets the same answer: No, I haven't seen anybody...

Mad and depressed, Nick walks through the boardwalk. He's left all his belongings back by the water, but he doesn't care anymore. He wonders where she is; now he hears someone singing...
- Breathe, breathe in the air, don't be afraid to care...
Nick lifts his head up and realizes that the words are coming up from a bum, sitting on the ground, outside of a bar. This guy maybe spent the night there, he's been there all day, so he's probably seen her passing by, he tells himself and decides to go ask him.
- ...leave, but don't leave me, look around, and choose your own ground. The bum sings, while
Nick stares at him. His clothes are ripped off and he's wearing an old jacket, even though it's really hot outside. It looks like he hasn't shaved for a while, he could be on his late 50's. He's sitting on top of an old towel, holding a can of beer on his right hand.
- Excuse me mister, Nick says.
- For long you live and high you fly, and smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry...
- Hey, are you alright?
- The bum stops singing...
- Uh...? Loose something?
- Uh? oh no, no, well, yes, I..., I was just wondering ...
The bum interrupts him...
- You were wondering? That's quite alright, now one moment please... "and all you touch and all you see, is all your life will ever be..."
- What was I thinking, you're just a bum.
The bum gets up.
- Yes I am, now if you excuse me...
- Oh wait, don't go please!
The bum sits down again.
OK then, second verse...
- No, no, I mean, No thanks, but I just wanted to ask you if you've seen my woman wondering around here, around this area, 'cause I don't know where to go...
- Well, where do you want to go? "run, rabbit run, dig that hole, forget the sun..."
- It doesn't matter where I want to go, as long as I find her...
- Who? Says the bum, as he points up to the sun.
- My woman. Wait, she went that way? Asks Nick pointing up also.
- Who did?
- My lovely woman.
- Oh, did she?
- I don't know, that's what you... but you said it..
- Did I?
- No, but when you pointed that way, I thought that you meant...
The bum sings again.
- "And when at last the work is done, don't sit down is time to dig another one...”
- Why are you always singing? You're not helping me at all
- I'm not?
- No, everything was great before, we were having fun in the water, then we got out, and I helped her myself lay down in the sand, then we kissed, and passed out together. Then I had a dream of her saying goodbye to me, and when I woke up, she was gone, It's like this is all a bad dream...
- Are you sure you're not still dreaming? Says the bum with a smile on his face.
- You're out of your mind; I asked you if you've seen her, and you pointed at the sun, obviously you're not good in the head...
The bum takes a sip of his beer, now he sings again...
- "For long you live and high you fly, but only if you ride the tide...”
- This is really a bad dream...
 says Nick.
- Is it?
- Yes! Says Nick, a little upset, and I'm waking up right now!
- Are you sure you want to do that? Says the bum, as Nick sits on the floor, holding his head, he can't hide the sadness anymore, he shuts his eyes, and when he tries to open them again then he realizes that everything starts to get blurry. He shakes his head, now he can't see anything, he only hears the bum singing:
- "And balanced on the biggest wave, you race towards an early grave..."
He opens his eyes; he is an old man now, laying down in bed, on a cold winter night. He looks up, his son is holding his head, he looks just like the way Nick looked that beautiful day at the beach. It's like a reflection of himself.
- Dad, are you OK?
Nick looks at his hands, an old man's hands.
- Yes son, I'm fine.
- But why are you crying?
Nick gets up and walks towards the mirror.
- I think I'm crying 'cause I finally let her go. Now he stares at the mirror. I accept the fact that she is not here anymore, that bum helped me out, ha ha.
Nick smiles, his son looks at him, confused.
- What are you talking about dad? Mom? Mom is downstairs making dinner...
- Never mind son, says Nick, still with that smile on his face. Now let's go eat before the food gets cold...
